* The forging gives better structural integrity, more uniform grain flow in the metal, fewer internal defects compared to cast bodies. 

* Because when open the passage is essentially unobstructed, the valve offers minimal pressure drop and allows large flow volumes. 

* Reliable shut-off capability in demanding services  high pressure, high temperature, corrosive media, steam, oil & gas. 

* Bidirectional flow capability (in many designs) and sturdy construction means long service life under harsh conditions. 

* Steam lines, high temperature systems (including power generation plants) where robust construction is required.

* Petrochemical / chemical plants for isolating pipelines carrying oil, gas, corrosive fluids. 

* Water-works, district heating, general industrial piping where full isolation (rather than flow regulation) is needed. 

* Small bore high pressure service (for example size  2 in many forged designs) although large bore forged valves are also available.
